the building was the location of socialite laurinda santos lobo's infamous parties in the early 1900s.

lobo invited famous artists and thinkers to rub shoulders with rio's upper class and the center carries on the tradition by hosting art events and outdoor concerts throughout the year.

the center was founded in 1979 by a group of neighbors led by the playwright paschoal carlos magno.
