there are two uniquely brazilian traditions surrounding this day. the first is the folias de reis, in which bands of musicians and revelers - echoing the trip undertaken by the kings to reach the newly born jesus - travel through the city playing music and delivering blessings.

carioca families will remain home, with the front door open, anticipating and welcoming the musicians and their benediction.  the players will likely be offered a slice of bolo de reis - king's cake, in english - the traditional pastry baked on dia de santos reis.
