at a glance

many, like futsal (a 5-a-side game played on a hard court with a smaller, heavier soccer ball) and futvoley (a cross between soccer and volleyball, played exclusively with the feet) have roots in soccer, but others are much older.

quemado, similar to american dodgeball, is played between two teams, who must strike their opponents with a small ball before they are struck. having been hit (or 'burnt), players are relegated to the 'cemetery' where they wait out the remainder of the game.

the timeless and international nature of childhood entertainment is evident in the games of 'hit the coin' and os cinco marias, which, still played by carioca children today, are familiar to westerners under different names.     arrow-back     arrow-forward
