the largest marine aquarium in latin america, aquario marinho do rio (rio de janeiro aquarium) comprises 25,000 square-metres, contains 5.4 million litres of water and is habitat to 12,000 marine animals from 400 different species.

as part of the regeneration project of rio's docklands the aquarium opened in 2014 along with the museu de amanha (museum of tomorrow) and the museu de arte do rio.

aquario marinho do rio, known as aquario, was designed by marcelo szpilman, an expert in marine biology who has worked for over 20 years in conservation and environmental protection, of marine animals in particular.
