the museum is located in botafogo and is open from 9 am to 5:30 pm tuesday through friday and 1-7 pm on weekends and holidays.   

sitting north of downtown rio de janeiro in praça mauá, the museu da arte do rio (mar) is an eclectic and forward-thinking amalgam of past and present, both in its content and in its construction.

physically, the museum is a product of two interconnected buildings - one was the residence of nineteenth century portuguese king dom joão vi and the other used to be a bus station.
