in 1993 the shore of sepetiba bay was declared an 'área de especial interesse ambiental' (area of special environmental interest), formalizing the protection granted to local flora and fauna, specifically to promote the survival of endangered species and the restoration of the local mangroves and forests.

challenged by pollution growth and too much organic material in the water, sepetiba bay is currently undergoing a variety of treatments expected to restore all the beaches in the area to their former brilliance.

the bay is filled with picturesque tiny islands,  and hemmed by some of the city's most alluring beaches, hosting some of the rarest flora and fauna of the region. this is a popular spot to go on island fishing tours. one of the most famous islands in sepetiba bay is just past the metropolitan border of rio - the ilha de itacuruçá, which has a beautiful beach to enjoy, whilst further inland, small waterfalls and hills to explore.
