at a glance

the same decree that includes the marambaia, extends to protect the área de proteção ambiental de mangaratiba, the region surrounding marambaia island.

in 2006 a legislation came in effect to protect atlantic rainforest vegetation - and as the marambaia is home to one of the largest and virtually untouched reserves of south-eastern brazil another layer of protection was extended over this island.

the presence on the island of the brazilian navy essentially guaranteed that legislations and decrees were respected - in fact these armed forces prohibit fishing, hunting, removal of woods, and any type of construction. the management of the brazilian navy and army keeps the area from becoming a commercialized tourist area, and maintains it as an off-the-beaten-track ecological treasure. arrow-back     arrow-forward
