at a glance

the spreading of rituals in honor of yemanjá'  is especially significant during the new year's eve celebrations, when the people of rio de janeiro gather at the beach of copacabana mostly dressed in white.

the tradition asks for believers to throw white flowers and offerings to the sea, in order to seek for the goddess' favors or show thankfulness for past generosity and blessings. typical offerings include roses, palm fronds, perfume, rice, and even chocolate, and champagne.

since 2011 these beach celebrations, called 'festas de iemanjá nas praias' have been declared cultural patrimony of the city, being an important expression of afro-brazilian culture. arrow-back     arrow-forward
