much of the fort do pico was remodeled in 1918 after architect marshal hermes da fonseca initiated the new design - the highest part of the building was created during this time, it comprises a new structure partially burrowed into the rock.

the magnificence of the structure remains today and the scars of battle are still evident - the stone watchtowers are now covered in creeping ivy. visitors are able to explore the corridors, galleries, tunnels and viewing platforms cut from the rock. the entrance to the fort is via the forte do rio branco, located at  265 alameda marechal pessoa leal, jurujuba, niterói.
