some of the most influential and recognized artists in rio are the award winning marcelo eco, creator of a colorful character easily identifiable on many walls, joel bergner, responsible for beautiful works in cidade de deus, acme dv, carlos bobi, and bruno big.

many choose to create hugely persnal and individualized projects in the city, at times to dramatic effect - some notable examples are in the providência favela, where JR, a french artist, painted portraits of women, who had lost loved ones to violence  on the walls of houses on the hill, while simultaneously establishing a community atelier and engagement program called casa amarello.
