the original and quintessential home for alternative music, in rio de janeiro, has to be casa da matriz, in the botafogo neighborhood. born in 1996, as a venture by fine arts student, leo feijoo, casa da matriz was the first place in rio to offer purely alternative sounds.
the venue is an old converted home, which is spread across two floors, with two dance floors, a shop, a lounge and old arcade games, and can accommodate up to 450 people, to rock the night away. the enterprise has been such a great success, that feijoo has now expanded the business into the matriz group, with a nightclub portfolio spread across the city.

there is usually a long queue to enter and sometimes to leave depending on what time this may be, as with many clubs in brazil customers have to pay for their drinks and cover charge on exit.
