at a glance
as a matter of fact, rio portuguese can be very different from portuguese spoken in other parts of brazil - in rio there is a strong musicality built in the language, and a marked accent on the pronunciation very distinctive of carioca portuguese.

rio's portuguese is the result of hundreds of years of mixing the original portuguese language with influences of  indigenous populations' tongue and of African languages spoken by the slaves, in addition to influences from countless traders from all over the world who would get to rio and establish a presence.

all of this has led to a language which in reality is as far from the portuguese used in portugal and other former portuguese colonies as is american english is from british english, or canadian french is from the french spoken in france.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
