posto 9 will always hold a special position in the mythology of rio de janeiro, as the perennial launching pad of cultural movements - though it is really only defined by a pervading spirit of egalitarianism and open-mindedness, there is also usually a specific group that tends to gather there - before becoming the hippest spot in ipanema, posto 9 was the (un)official place to be for the intellectual leaders of the tropicália movement.

the meetings of these great minds continue to be the stuff of legend - nearby, at ipanema posto 8, the construction company, tasked with completing the underwater emissions system, had constructed a pier that also served as both a stage and as an additional pulpit for different groups of the same movements. 

esteemed attendees such as tropicalista musicians caetano veloso and gilberto gil,  freshly returned from european exile, congregated with their counterparts in film and visual arts, along with occasional surfers who utilized the pier to catch waves.
