at a glance

the sea urchin is an invertebrate, belonging to the same family as the starfish - it has a spherical body, and ranges in size from 11 to 25 centimeters, exhibiting a vast array of magnificent colours, including white, black, orange, purple and green.

it has no eyes but its body is covered in light-sensitive cells which direct it towards sustenance and alert it to predators - there are 700 species of sea urchin worldwide, and they feed mainly on algae and other oceanic plant-life - due to global pollution and dredging, their populations are now thought to be under threat of extinction.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
