at a glance

visitors should either go directly to their planned destination, or if they are interested in exploring lapa they should do so accompanied by a local or trustworthy friend who knows the area - it is best to leave cameras and other flashy devices at home.

as of 2014, the secretary of state created an operation called lapa presente which provides the area with a police unit and other services including but not limited to protection and maintenance of the neighborhood, and traffic control.

lapa is beautiful and boasts a lot of attractions, such as the escadaria selarón and feira rio antigo, which is a monthly charming antique market - if visiting the district during the day, it is helpful to be discrete and not attracting a lot of attentions with large cameras or taking pictures of locals without permission, and promenading is best done with a local who is in the know.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
