there are 365 total islands under angra's jurisdiction, representing just as many different sizes and unique qualities, 'one for each day of the year' joke the residents -  the most important among hundreds of angra's offshore islands is ilha grande.

the island of ilha grande was originally called ipaum-guaçu by the indigenous tamoio people, and as its name suggests, it is the biggest island in the angra region - it is arguably the best-known and so important to be treated separately in our portal.

with nearly 75 square miles of territory filled with beaches, forest, waterfalls and mountains, the island is a veritable paradise of natural beauty - there is plenty of sites to be found as well, such as the ruins of the dois rios and lazareta prisons in the island's interior.

there is also the castelhanos lighthouse on ilha grande's eastern end - though much of the island is protected from urban development, there is plenty of lodging and eateries, largely concentrated in vila abraão and bananal.
