about one hour away from angra dos reis, mambucaba is a historic village located on the border between angra and paraty - the settlement of the region dates back to the beginning of the seventeenth century.

originally home to sugarcane growers, production shifted with the brazilian economy to coffee by the early 1800s - as business grew, so did the town and by the beginning of the next century, the coffee cycle had run its course and the action shifted to other areas, leaving mambucaba more or less preserved as it was in that time.

today it is a tranquil beachside enclave with a romantic ambience, complete with plenty of live music and beautiful colonial architecture - the chafariz da carioca is a public fountain that was built by the municipal government in 1842, the first of its kind in angra.
