at one time it was the site of a japanese fishing colony - today the old buildings have been converted into bed-and-breakfasts but the food culture remains, and the mixture of asian and native styles makes bananal an excellent place to eat, while looking at the fishermen's boats surrounded by green hills.  

there are a variety of small shops selling local arts and crafts, mostly located near the beach or along the cobblestone - ideal for an evening walk before dinner.
