according to historical records, there were a few houses occupied by both portuguese and indios, who farmed fruit and vegetables and meat including pork and chicken - while the portuguese were expert farmers, the tamoios were better at hunting and fishing, creating a precious synergy.

a coast guard was soon set up, after an increase in pirate and illegal commerce activity in the region - the coast guard was put under the command of martin de sá who controlled the entire coast between the nearby cabo frio and santa catarina, in the south of brazil.   

as a result, inhabiting the islands in the area was strictly prohibited so that any potential contact with pirates, smugglers and enemies of the portuguese crown was stopped.
