quarantine hospitals are called lazaretos, last of which was deactivated in 1893 and during the military dictatorship, and converted in a penitentiary for political prisoners.
later, during the constitutional revolution in 1932, this building was partially demolished, and the prisoners transported to the other side of ilha grande, to what would became one of most famous prisons in brazil - the construction of the cândido mendes penal institute in 1940 increased the island's capacity for prisoners to 1000 inmates, both criminals and political detainees.
many illustrious brazilians were detained at the penal institute, including nelson falcăo rodrigues, a most famous playwright, novelist, and journalist.
