one of nova friburgo's more recent enterprises is the museu do mel, or 'honey museum', opened in 2004. already, considered one of the city's main tourist attractions, the museum has the objective to educate, empower, promote and enhance the biodiversity of bees and native plants, and the eco systems associated with them.

the museum was set up by luís morães, a vet and beekeeper, and offers all guests an intriguing look at the bees of region - the museum includes a 'garden of little bee', with a meliponary of indigenous stingless bees - local guides are easily available in shops in the center of town, offering help in organizing activities such as hiking, rappelling, jeep tours, biking, and even horseback riding.
