later, this region was also the first area in brazil to be settled by germans - by 1890, the arrival of more immigrants from italy, portugal, and syria accelerated the development of nova friburgo and on that year the community was officially declared a city. 

these new settlers participated in its physical and cultural expansion of the city, transforming it into the gem it is today - the early settlers were mostly farmers, however around the turn of the twentieth century, newly developed industrial interests created the sound infrastructure that exists to this day.

with this, new commercial establishments were set-up, along with the creation of a local tourism industry to take advantage of the beautiful mountainous scenery and mild weather - the area of brazil where nova friburgo is located was selected for reasons that quickly become obvious.
