The library has free wi-fi and offers customer research assistance for the retrieval of titles. Beyond book loans, the institution runs language courses in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Mandarin, painting on canvas, and a free computer course.

In the auditorium of the library a number of fun and informative events are held throughout the year, such as music and dance festivals and performances, courses, lectures, workshops, symposiums and exhibitions of works of art. Many of these events are organized and hosted by the Associação dos Amigos da Biblioteca Popular de Botafogo - Machado de Assis (Association of Friends of the Popular Library of Botafogo - Machado de Assis).
