notably, all sea traffic entering and leaving the bay and the port were within the fort's range of fire. therefore, at its height of operations, it bristled with over fifty large artillery pieces and cannons, providing insurmountable defense to the bay. these guns mostly guarded the boca da guanabara, the harbor entrance to guanabara bay, and the sea passage as well.
