visitors to brazil will discover, that many locations have more than one name. in rio, it is particuarly noticable, that most places have a formal, often extremely long name, as well as a commonly used short name.

this is the case with the forte do leme, also know as  the forte duque de caixas. construction on this fort began in the late seventeen hundreds - an impending invasion by the spanish prompted the new fort to be built on top of morro do leme (leme's hill).   as with many of the portuguese forts, it was built to work within a network of other forts for coastal defense.
