over the years the fort has witnessed in many historic events, from the revolt of the eighteen in 1922 to its role in world war two. 

decommissioned as a fort since 1965, it houses the centro de estudos de pessoal do exército brasileiro (study center of brazilian army staff) - the center provides officers with language and technical courses.

the fort is open to the public for tours - visitors also have the opportunity to participate in ecology walks in the adjacent,  protected atlantic forestconservation area.
