after
avenida presidente vargas, named for
the man who envisioned it, was christened in 1944, the samba
parade began to utilize it for its space and central location -
it was in this period that the parade began to take the form
that it maintains to this day.
in 1961 it had become so popular, that
paid
admission for spectators was required for the first time, and
1963 was the first year that the parade began in the
candelária
area, at the far east end of the avenue, as opposed to the
intersection at avenida rio branco.
