quietly set in the center of town, there is a
cobble stone road that winds uphill, and suddenly ends abruptly in a cliff.
yet, it once did lead somewhere
- it was access to one of the most important parts of rio, the
morro do castelo (hill
of the castle), a hill that was theater to some of the fiercest
battles between the french and the portoguese. a
hill that was later flattened, and its soil used to create
landfills and areas in flamengo, and in the
urca neighborhood.
