the years went by, what was supposed to be only a temporary
settlement, became a permanent quarter. by 1910, as it could be expected from a
squatter community of disenfranchised combat veterans, favela
hill was considered the most violent area in rio.
it was at this point that the word 'favela'
expanded to be more generally associated with poor, and often
dangerous, unregulated hillside settlements of huts and shacks.
