the settlement's first defense efforts were at nearby morro cara de cão (dog face hill). the fortifications were important to defend the settlement from the marauding french pirates.

morro do castelo (castle hill) as it came to be called, however, was deemed a better location.   soon after the new fortress was established, the area below it known as the lowland was populated.
