portoguese king dom sebastião was the king at the time, and he was named after saint sebastian (são sebastião), therefore the name. for centuries the city was referred to just as são sebastião, ignoring the latter part.

after hostilities ended, the victorious portuguese moved the city center to the now flattened morro do castelo (hill of the castle), and declared it the new capital of brazil.
