other says that it was a refuge for 'dangerous' prisoners who escaped from the (now defunct) penal colony on nearby ilha grande. however, the story accepted as the truth is still somewhat different.

originally built in 1903, the penitentiary on ilha grande was  built for 'ordinary prisoners', and though there existed installations for maximum security, the site was always a repository for prisoners of both the petty and political variety.
