at a glance

located just south of downtown in the catete neighborhood, the museu da república inhabits the catete palace, which functioned as the brazilian equivalent of the white house between 1896 and 1960, when the capital moved to brasília and the seat of government converted into this museum.

as such, some of the most significant political events in the history of the republic happened in the building that it is now the museum -including the declaration of war on germany in 1917 and the suicide of president getúlio vargas in 1954.
