the park is total of 160 hectares (395 acres), 28.9% of which is mata atlântica (brazil's atlantic forest) vegetation. the new park's area was reforested in 1987 by the community with the help of the brazilian army. the result was the creation of a particular type of atlantic forest, more humid and resistant to the dry season.

in july 1995, 60,000 native species were planted, creating a unique protected area that gives home to more than 90 species of birds, between them 5 different species of hummingbirds, 33 species of butterflies, 6 species of native fig trees, and a large variety of orchids and bromeliads.

furthermore, the park also possesses ruins and a number of spectacular viewpoints from which visitors can gaze over the city. One of these vistas looks out over the incredible Botafogo Cove Pão de Açúcar (sugar loaf). Created on June 5 -which happens to be World Environment Day -the park is a brilliant addition to the city.
