at a glance

with 40 species of birds of prey habitating the various terrains of brazil, it is not uncommon to see the northern crested caracara (caracara cheriway), the black-corllared hawk (busarellus nigircollis), or the osprey/fishing eagle (pandion halietus) throughout the country, feeding on fish or small to medium sized rodents. however for an amazing and unforgettable sight, nothing beats the harpy eagle (harpia harpyja), the largest and most powerful of all the birds of prey in the americas, which feeds on sloths, monkeys, armadillos and other medium to larger sized animals.

the most prominent reptile is the alligator-like broad-snouted caiman (caiman latirostris). living off mainly invertebrates, its diet increases with its size and larger specimens have been noted to eat fish, birds and other reptiles. several snakes like the boa (boa constrictor), and jararacuçu pit vipers (bothrops jararacussu), coral snakes (micrurus), and machete savane (chironius carinatus) are found throughout the country along with the gold teju lizard (tupinambis teguixin), amazon lava lizard (tropidurus torquatus) and giant ameiva (ameiva ameiva). arrow-back     arrow-forward
