in partnership with many of the state universities, research institutions such as fiocruz and the san diego zoological society as well as  non-government organizations - ngos from around the world.

brazil has the largest number of primate species at over 75, of which close to one third or 22 of these are  at home in the various rainforests of the county. the most compelling statistic however is that as many as 40 of the primate species are endangered, with an additional 7 being critically endangered. a few such examples include the buffy-tufted marmoset (callithrix aurita), woolly spider monkey (arachnoides brachyteles), and the golden lion tamarin (leontopithecus rosalia).

however primates are not the only mammals that are found in brazil - many different species of marsupials, lagomorphs and rodents are found in abundance. these include the yapok/water opossum (chironectes minimus), found in streams that descend from the serra do mar, the southern tamandua/lesser anteater (tamandua tetradectyla), the extremely rare maned sloth (bradypus torguatus), the collard peccary (pecari tajacu); the brazilian porcupine (coendou prehensilis), and the capybara (hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) - the largest rodent in the world.arrow-back     arrow-forward
