the campo de santana is not only a beautiful city park - it commemorates a glorious moment in brazilian history. during the seventeenth century, the land on which the park is located, was a large open campo (fied). the field received its name from the church of nossa senhora de santana (our lady of santana) that was built in  here.

at one point, the field was used for military exercises and for large public and religious festivals.
