It is situated within the Parque Natural Municipal de Marapendi (Marapendi Municipal Natural Park), which is entered from Recreio dos Bandeirantes and has an area of 195 hectares, around 33 of which are constituted by the Lagoa da Marapendi.

the park was established in 1978 and extends across the coastal strip of Barra da Tijuca, boasting a diverse topography of sandy regions, mangroves and salt marshes. it offers visitors an array of leisure activities, including hiking, picnicking and, for the younger adventurers there are a number of playgrounds. Visitors can also enjoy a scenic and peaceful boat trip along the lagoon.
