to protect this strategic location, the são joão fortress was built, which still remains close to the mountain, and is open to the public. the mountain owes its name, to the charming little district of urca, which is sandwiched in-between the mountain and the bay.

a peaceful yet exotic neighborhood, urca is a popular spot for taking in some of the city's marvelous views, whilst relaxing at one of the neighborhoods numerous restaurants or bars.
