the history of the city dates back over 170 years, when emperor pedro i was stunned by the beauty and climate of the area, and decided to build a summer home there - it was his son, emperor pedro ii, who eventually completed the project.

the construction of the imperial palace was soon to follow, causing the arrival of many european migrants, predominantly from france, italy and germany - these various european influences make petrópolis the cultured, varied, and eclectic city it is today.
