for this reason, it has become fairly common for graffiti artists to be commissioned by the government to recuperate an aging or underutilized area. in 2014 the institute eixorio commissioned 130 artists to paint a  40-kilometers wall edging rio's subway line 2, from são cristóvão to pavuna, creating the biggest open-air art gallery in the world - named galerio.

this practice is not without controversy - in one case a city-run street art project in lapa was used to promote a beer brand, which raised ethical questions in the community.
