legend has it that this church was built in the seventeenth century at the request of an blind indigenous woman who recovered her vision while being in the care of two local residents. 

the old indian woman claimed nossa senhora do desterro (our lady of exile) gave her vision back, appeared to her and asked a chapel be built in place of a plantation of carnations.
