at a glance

in fact, cordőes were frowned upon by both the intellectual elite of the times, and by the press, a social pressure that forced many cordőes to officially rename themselves as blocos, or turn into the fancier version, ranches.

when this happened, a clear distinction started to emerge between modern cordőes and ranches, essentially creating what today are respectively blocos and samba schools.

this is also when the famous processions of cars emerged - named 'corsos' these parades took place in avenida presidente vargas and avenida rio branco, and gained popularity into the 19th century.

corsos continued into mid-twenthieth century, but they are now extinct, replaced by carnival floats and parades. arrow-back     arrow-forward
