at a glance

during carnival in rio there are multiple events happening, with the main one being the sambódromo's parades, but there are other events happening all around the city.

these events, street blocos and carnival balls, historically stood in stark contrast with each other.

in modern times, with the emergence of mass media and the liberalization and modernization of society, their differences and limits have blurred.

street blocos are descendants of entrudos, a sort of playful carnival war game and political battleground, especially for the poor and for the working classes.

these street parties were stages where underrepresented people could voice their views and, via the use of a costume, pretend to be someone else for a day.     arrow-back     arrow-forward
