at a glance

the costumes that were worn during these entrudos were called fanstasias, which technically isn't the portuguese word for costume but instead, the word for fantasy, wish, or desire.

during carnival, the poor could so be someone else for a moment, and be treated as such - and at blocos, many dressed as doctors or politicians, possibly kings or queens.

yet, many of these fantasias often embedded social and political messages, in the form of sarcasm or irony.

street parties and entrudos often had political undertones with hopes for the betterment of society.

on the opposite side of these raucous street festivities were the carnival balls, which have always drawn the upper classes and the bourgeois.    arrow-back     arrow-forward
