at a glance | carioca culture has a particularly strong social and outdoor component - beaches, parks, and hills where to play sports and enjoy the sun, and barbeques where to meet friends and family and enjoy one another, so a rainy day clearly affects the mood of most. furthermore, heavy rains have often caused serious problems both in the city and across the state - as recently as 2011, flooding and mudslides deeply affected the lives of many. this said, rio de janeiro has lots to offer beyond the natural attractions that easily pop to mind when thinking of a clear blue sky. the city has a long list of shopping malls, many large enough to require an entire day to browse, and all with multiple-screens movie theaters, restaurants, children play areas, and food courts. |
