the jardim zoológico, as it is known in portuguese, is rio de janeiro's zoological garden, located in parque da boa vista in the city's neighborhood of são cristóvão.

located in the former home of the portuguese royal family, rio zoo spans almost 30 acres and contains nearly 3000 animals of over 400 different species for visitors to see, including various rare species of birds and monkeys native to the region.

among them is the yellow-throated capuchin monkey, a very rare subspecies that was bred via the rio de janeiro primate center.

the zoo is set up along a path, so that visitors can get to see each part by taking a walk along the garden, divided in four main sections.
