the real saint. valentine is believed to be one of three possible saints, but most agree that the first 'valentine' card occurred when one of the three valentine's sent a letter to the girl he loved before he was put to death and signed it 'from your valentine.' 

while some small local celebrations still mark this day, in rio de janeiro and brazil, valentine's day is celebrated on a completely different day, on june 12th.
