october 19th - beginning of daylight savings (horario de verăo) is the term used to the describe the five to eight months period of time where countries set their clocks forward an hour to reduce the amount of daylight to the evening hours. first proposed in the late 19th century, it wasn't officially adopted by any country for another 20 years until 1916. today the vast majority of europe and north america follow the procedure with very few countries in the southern hemisphere doing so - the notable exception being brazil. adopted in 1931, daylight savings is only observed in the central and southern areas of the country and the starting and ending dates change year to year. | important dates | |||||
