the Registro Nacional de Estrangeiros - rne is the identity card required by all foreign nationals who plan to stay in the country of Brazil for more than the 90 day visa period, and not as tourist but as legal residents with authorization to work. Upon arrival a foreigner has 30 days in which to register his or her intent to stay with the Federal Police (Polícia Federal) and request a RNE. the procedure can seem daunting at first, and we always suggest hiring a local specialist or an attorney to aid in the process. the process can take anywhere from 6 months to a year to complete, and cannot be started outside the country. | important dates | |||
